The Jim Lehrer of Podcasts

Chris Brooks runs a boardgame blog where he recently offered his assessment of "the three" boardgame podcasts, Geek Speak, Boardgames To Go, and The Dice Tower. I'm happy with his assessment of my podcast, which closes with...
Think of Mark and Boardgames To Go as the the Jim Lehrer of Podcasts. A bit dry at times, but solid content worth tuning into.

In my own comment to this entry, I mentioned two more podcasts I'm aware of that have at least some boardgame content. More are coming!

Umm.. well, honestly, of all of the podcasters, you are the one I'd most enjoy meeting.

Aldie and Derk are just embarrassing, off-putting, and downright annoying. I wouldn't ever want to be anywhere near these guys, who mostly come off as pretentious assholes.

Tom & Joe are enjoyable. I don't feel like I need to be a member of the complete and total geeky dork club to enjoy them; however, their banter gets to be a little too much at times - to the point where I wonder if they're really friends at all. I wouldn't mind meeting either of these guys.

You are inarguably #1 in one area - speaking ability and production quality (when you don't use the Treo or Palm or whatever, that is).

While I appreciate Steve's kind words for ME in the previous comment, I don't like the shots taken at the other guys. Look, this isn't an either/or situation--if you don't care for another podcast, just tune out. That's the way it is with websites, with blogs...podcasts simply need to reach the same level of maturity and development. Anyone who's listened to my podcast for a while knows I'm waiting for the day when there are lots of good boardgaming podcasts, and listeners will be able to find the few that are just right for them.

As for the last comment in parentheses, that's the second one I've received about the iffy sound quality of the Treo. I could use that time to prep for other shows using my better recording rig, rather than squeezing in another show with the mobile recorder. Hmm, sounds like the next poll question!

For me and for those who may not have a chance to meet him, Mark's personality really does come through on his pod casts.

Am I the only one who originally read that as the Tom Lehrer of Podcasts.

I can just see the Podcast albums now:

That was the Game that Was.

I really enjoy the "Jim Lehrer" approach of the shows. To me this means thoughtful -- willing to take the time to fully cover a topic rather than moving things along just to keep it 'entertaining'.

I have learned a great deal by listening to the shows, which I consider to be the mark of a good podcast. Although I occasionally listen to music podcasts, 'chatter' shows, where the podcaster's 'personality' is considered the main incentive for listening rarely remain in my subscription list for long.
