BGTG 55 - April 4, 2006 - "Dark Johnson" Interview (with David Arnott)
Dave Arnott sprung this show on me, turning the tables on the interviewer. His plan was to expose me for the sinister, heartless gamer that I really am. Of course, the plan backfired and I come out smelling like a rose. :)
No, he just asks some fun questions about my changing tastes and even behaviors in this hobby, touching on subjects like game themes, new games vs old, and short games vs long. It was a fun conversation, one that made for a nice, little show. There was also some good discussion about Elasund in particular but I clipped that part out, to be part of a David Arnott Leftovers show along with some further talk about Medici.

A very nice podcast. Really enjoyed it. Arnott did a very nice job interviewing it, it was fun to have the tables turned.
PS - I'm not 40 until next year.

Nice parting shot at Elasund and Hacienda. I haven't played Hacienda but my one play of Elasund brought quite a bit of turmoil and we are anxious to play again.
I'm waiting to hear you back up those rabbit punches.
Hee hee! It wasn't originally supposed to be such a parting shot, since Dave & I went on to discuss Elasund, at least. But I clipped that out, to be shared later in the Leftovers show. The short version is that I also liked Elasund quite a bit after my first play, but it cooled off RAPIDLY. Game during time and similarity of play were the culprits.
Hacienda has almost the opposite arc. I didn't care for my first play, but have liked it a little more after trying online. Maybe I'm just starting to understand it. But neither are great games for me.
Great show ... Dave did a really good job on that one ... nice idea of switching the roles.
And a lot of things mentioned in it apply to many of us I guess. I mean - can a "gamer" play "short games" without to deviate from his "role" as something "special". Well - he can - and it's lot of fun.
Myself trying to keep a good balance between brainburners and easy games. That's why I attend two gaming groups of different people - works fantastic.

I can't believe you don't like Fury of Dracula. I never heard of it before, but after my first play I was hooked. It's like hide and go seek advanced. A lot of people compare it to Scotland Yard. I like it mostly because it's a 4vs1 game, not like anything else I've ever played. I agree it does take too long to play, however. Perhaps its only weakness.
Also, Vegas Showdown is a weird one. I was predisposed to NOT like it because it had a casino theme. But I gave it a chance and realized it was actually a very good bidding game with some Alhambra elements.

My preference is for yellow pieces, cause I feel sorry for them in a metaphysical way because I always assume its the colour that gets picked last
